PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone for Major Ammonia-Urea Fertiliser Project in Assam, Boosting Northeast’s Industrial Growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the Ammonia-Urea Fertiliser Project of the Assam Valley Fertiliser and Chemical Company Limited (AVFCCL) at Namrup, marking a significant milestone in Assam’s industrial and agricultural development.

The project, with an estimated investment of over ₹10,600 crore, will be developed as a brownfield facility within the existing premises of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited. Once completed, the plant is expected to produce around 12.7 lakh metric tonnes of urea annually, strengthening fertiliser availability not only in Assam but across the northeastern region.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi described the project as a new chapter in Assam’s industrial journey, highlighting its role in reducing India’s dependence on fertiliser imports and ensuring timely, affordable supplies for farmers. PM said the initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to farmer welfare, self-reliance, and balanced regional development.

The Prime Minister also underlined the project’s potential to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, benefiting local youth and boosting the regional economy. Improved fertiliser availability is expected to lower transportation costs and support higher agricultural productivity in the Northeast.

The project reflects a collaborative effort involving the Central and Assam governments, along with major public sector undertakings, reinforcing the Centre’s focus on accelerating industrial growth in the region. Leaders from the state hailed the foundation stone-laying as a historic moment, expressing confidence that the project would serve as a catalyst for long-term economic and social development in Assam.

With the Namrup fertiliser project, the government aims to strengthen India’s fertiliser security while positioning Assam as a key industrial hub in the Northeast.
