BJP Crosses 20% Vote Share Only in Thiruvananthapuram; Congress Leads, CPM Second in Local Body Polls

Thiruvananthapuram: The official vote-share figures of political parties in the local body elections have been released by the State Election Commission. According to the data, the United Democratic Front (UDF) emerged as the biggest gainer, with the Congress securing the highest vote share among parties.

The Congress topped the list with a 29.17 percent vote share, while the CPI(M) stood second with 27.16 percent. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lagged behind with a vote share of 14.76 percent.

As per the Election Commission’s official figures, the Congress crossed the 30 percent vote-share mark in eight districts, whereas the CPI(M) managed to achieve this feat in only two districts. The BJP failed to secure a 30 percent vote share in any district. Notably, the party crossed the 20 percent mark in just one district — Thiruvananthapuram, where it registered a historic performance by winning 50 seats in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

The CPI(M) recorded over 30 percent vote share in Kannur and Palakkad districts. The Congress, on the other hand, crossed the 30 percent mark in eight districts stretching from Thrissur to Thiruvananthapuram. While the Congress made significant gains in northern Kerala, it could not cross the 30 percent threshold in those districts.

Though the UDF registered a resounding victory in Malappuram, the major beneficiary there was the Muslim League, which played a decisive role in the alliance’s success. At the state level, the Muslim League secured a total vote share of 9.77 percent.

The figures highlight a clear edge for the Congress-led UDF in terms of vote share, while also underlining the BJP’s limited but notable breakthrough in the state capital district.
