Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called on all MPs from the state to join forces and push for the President’s approval of the Wildlife Protection (Kerala Amendment) Bill, 2025, a legislation the government considers crucial for addressing the state’s growing human–wildlife conflict.
During a virtual meeting, the Chief Minister stressed that obtaining presidential assent is essential to overcome legal barriers under national wildlife laws, particularly those that restrict swift action in conflict-hit areas. He emphasized that the amendment will empower officials to respond more effectively and protect both communities and wildlife in crisis situations.
Vijayan also urged MPs to press the Centre for the release of funds earmarked for victims of wildlife attacks and to restore over ₹10,000 crore that was cut from Kerala’s borrowing limits. Additionally, he requested support for increasing the Union government’s share in major welfare schemes, including the updated PMAY 2.0 housing programme.
Meanwhile, political discussions around the issue intensified. Congress leader Sunny remarked that suspended MLA Rahul Mamkootathil is currently functioning only as an MLA, and arrest in any case does not necessitate resignation — citing the example of CPM MLA Mukesh to underline the point.
With the state facing rising wildlife-related incidents and mounting public pressure, the government is hoping for rapid action from Kerala’s representatives in Delhi to ensure the bill’s passage and immediate implementation.
