Twin Cyclonic Circulations Followed by New Low-Pressure Area; Widespread Rain Likely in South and Central Kerala Till Wednesday, Yellow Alert in Seven Districts

A new low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, adding to the impact of two existing cyclonic circulations over the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that, due to these combined weather systems, Kerala is likely to experience widespread rain with thunderstorms and isolated heavy rainfall till Wednesday.

The new low-pressure area has developed over the Malacca Strait and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. Meanwhile, two cyclonic circulations persist — one over the Indian Ocean near the equator and the Kanyakumari Sea, and another over the southeast Arabian Sea. These systems are collectively influencing Kerala’s weather.

Yellow Alert Issued Across Multiple Districts

The IMD has issued Yellow Alerts in various districts for the coming days:

22/11/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam
23/11/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam
24/11/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram
25/11/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam
26/11/2025: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam

Heavy rainfall refers to precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

The IMD forecasts that the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will move west-northwest and may intensify into a depression by Monday over the southeast Bay of Bengal. Within the next 48 hours, it is expected to strengthen further over the southwest Bay of Bengal while continuing to track west-northwest.

The existing cyclonic circulations — one near the equator over the Indian Ocean close to Kanyakumari, and the other over the southeast Arabian Sea — are also contributing to the persistent rainfall over Kerala.

The IMD has urged residents, especially in southern and central districts, to remain cautious as unstable weather and intermittent heavy showers are expected to continue in the coming days.
