New Low-Pressure System Triggers Heavy Rain Alert in Kerala; South Coast on High-Wave Warning

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is bracing for a spell of heavy rain over the next four days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alerts for multiple districts after a fresh low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Idukki have been placed under yellow alert for today, with southern Kerala expected to witness intense downpours.

The rain warnings continue through the week:

  • Tuesday: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Malappuram
  • Wednesday: Kottayam and Idukki
  • Thursday: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Kannur, and Kasaragod

Isolated heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours is expected, according to the IMD.

Adding to the weather concerns, INCOIS has issued a high-wave alert for Kerala’s southern coastline.

  • Along the Thiruvananthapuram coast (Kaappil to Pozhiyoor), waves of 0.9–1.1 meters are expected until 8:30 PM.
  • Along the Kanyakumari coast (Neerodi to Arokiapuram), waves of 1.3–1.5 meters are likely until 5:30 PM, raising the threat of coastal flooding.

The weather disturbance is caused by a new low-pressure area near Sri Lanka in the southwest Bay of Bengal, coupled with a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea near Kerala. These combined systems are set to bring light to moderate rain with thunderstorms across the state over the next five days.
