Trump Hints at Lower Tariffs on India; Major Trade Deal on the Horizon

In a significant development for India–US relations, President Donald Trump has announced that tariffs on Indian goods will soon be reduced, signaling progress toward a “fair and balanced” trade agreement between the two nations.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Sergio Gor, the newly appointed US Ambassador to India, at the Oval Office, Trump said the two countries are “very close” to finalizing a new trade deal.

“We’re working on a trade agreement with India that’s unlike anything before. They don’t love me right now — but they will love me again soon. A fair trade deal is on the way,” Trump remarked with a smile.

The President added that the earlier tariff hikes were introduced because India was importing large quantities of oil from Russia. “Now that India has reduced those imports, it’s time to reconsider and lower the tariffs,” Trump said.

Trump expressed confidence that Ambassador Gor would play a key role in strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries — a relationship he described as “one of America’s most important international ties.”

The comments come as India and the US continue active trade negotiations, raising optimism about a landmark economic agreement in the near future.
