Canada has rejected a staggering 74% of Indian applications for study permits in August 2025, marking one of the highest refusal rates ever recorded for Indian students. The rejection rate has more than doubled from 32% in 2023, signaling a major policy shift as Ottawa tightens scrutiny on student visa applications. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the clampdown comes amid growing concerns over fraudulent applications and fake admission letters, many of which were reportedly linked to Indian agents.
The move has sent shockwaves through India’s student community, as Canada has long been one of the most sought-after destinations for higher education. The number of Indian applications plunged from around 20,900 in August 2023 to just 4,500 this year, reflecting both tougher regulations and waning optimism among prospective students. By comparison, rejection rates for Chinese applicants stood at just 24%, and the overall global average was 40%.
Canadian authorities say the crackdown aims to preserve the integrity of the immigration system after uncovering over 1,500 fraudulent study permits in 2023. The new measures include stricter verification of university acceptance letters, higher financial requirements, and deeper background checks.
Experts warn that the sharp fall in Indian enrolments could impact Canadian universities that heavily rely on tuition from international students. Meanwhile, many Indian students are now exploring alternative destinations such as the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe. Diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa have further complicated the situation, adding uncertainty to future educational and immigration ties between the two nations.
