Cholera Resurfaces in Kerala; Case Confirmed in Ernakulam, Patient Under Treatment at Medical College

Kochi: Cholera has resurfaced in Kerala, with a fresh case confirmed in Ernakulam district. The infection was detected in a migrant worker residing in Kakkanad, who is currently undergoing treatment at the Ernakulam Government Medical College Hospital.

The case was confirmed on October 25, raising health concerns as it comes amid reports of amoebic meningoencephalitis in the state. According to health officials, the patient developed symptoms shortly after arriving in Kerala from another state and was immediately admitted to the hospital, where tests confirmed cholera infection.

District medical authorities said the patient is now out of danger, and individuals who came in contact with him have been screened and monitored as a precautionary measure.

This marks the third confirmed cholera case in Kerala this year. Earlier in April, a 63-year-old man from Kowdiar, Thiruvananthapuram, died due to cholera, followed by the death of a 48-year-old man from Thalavady, Kuttanad, in May, which was also suspected to be caused by the infection. However, health officials had attributed that death to other underlying medical conditions.

Last year, the state had reported around a dozen cholera cases, prompting the health department to step up disease surveillance and preventive measures across vulnerable districts.
