Diwali celebrations have brought a significant financial boost to 386 women in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha district, who collectively earned an estimated Rs 26 lakh by making and selling traditional earthen and cow dung lamps.
According to officials, members of 114 self-help groups (SHGs) produced nearly 16 lakh diyas for the festive season. The lamps were sold through 48 stalls set up at marketplaces across different blocks of the district.
Each woman earned an average of Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000 through the initiative during the festival season, taking the groups’ estimated combined income to around Rs 26 lakh, an official statement said.
The initiative provided the women with an opportunity to generate additional income while promoting traditional, locally made lamps during Diwali.
