Wayanad on Edge: Punappuzha Swells After 100 mm Rainfall in a Night, Chooralmala Residents Put on Alert

Wayanad: Torrential overnight rain has sparked concern in Chooralmala as the Punappuzha river surged with force near Mundakkai, following a downpour of 100 mm. The river is now flowing aggressively beneath the Bailey bridge—an area that faced catastrophic landslides just last year.

The Mundakkai–Attamala road has been submerged due to the rising water level, prompting authorities to issue a precautionary alert to residents in surrounding areas.

Revenue officials have initiated a probe to assess whether a possible landslide in the upstream hills may have triggered the sudden surge in river flow. While initial inspections show no visible signs of a landslide, officials have stated that a thorough evaluation is needed for confirmation.

Fortunately, there are no homes near the flooded stretch of the river, as the area had already been evacuated and residents relocated after last year’s disaster. Authorities have reassured the public that there is currently no danger to life and that there is no cause for alarm.
