Thiruvananthapuram: The Vizhinjam International Seaport has delivered a blockbuster first year, marking one of the fastest growth stories in India’s maritime sector. Within just 12 months of commercial operations, the port has handled an impressive 615 ships and 1.32 million TEU containers, showcasing its rapid rise as a global maritime hub, Minister V. N. Vasavan announced.
In a celebratory note on Facebook, the minister highlighted that Vizhinjam has firmly earned its spot on the world maritime map, thanks to uninterrupted services connecting America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The port’s maiden year saw the arrival of 41 Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) measuring over 399 meters, along with 154 vessels exceeding 300 meters in length and 45 ships with drafts deeper than 16 meters. A major milestone was set when the MSC Verona, with a draft of 17.1 meters, became the deepest-draft vessel ever handled in South India, further cementing Vizhinjam’s operational prowess. The port also secured approval for an Immigration Check Post, boosting its international capabilities.
The next leap is already on the horizon—Vizhinjam’s second-phase development projects will be officially launched in January. The port began its trial run on July 11, 2024, commenced commercial operations on December 3, and was proudly dedicated to the nation on May 2, 2025.
