Chennai: Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay will appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi today for questioning in connection with the Karur tragedy, a stampede during a TVK campaign event that claimed 41 lives, including women and children.
Vijay left Chennai at 7 am in a private aircraft and is expected to reach the CBI headquarters by noon. The agency had issued him a notice under BNSS Section 179, directing him to cooperate with the investigation.
The case relates to the tragic incident that occurred on September 27, 2025, in Karur, Tamil Nadu, when a massive crowd gathered for a TVK campaign programme, leading to a deadly stampede. The incident triggered widespread public outrage and invited sharp criticism from the judiciary.
The Supreme Court had earlier handed over the investigation to the CBI. As part of the ongoing probe, the agency has already questioned several senior TVK leaders in Delhi. Party representatives have also submitted video evidence, alleging administrative lapses on the part of the Tamil Nadu government.
Investigators have examined the vehicle used by Vijay during the campaign and questioned its driver. The case continues to draw intense public and political attention, with the outcome of the CBI probe expected to have significant ramifications for both governance and the state’s political landscape.
Earlier this month, the Tamil Nadu government filed a counter-affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking to quash the order for a CBI inquiry, even as the central agency presses ahead with its investigation.
