US Halts New Student Visa Appointments: Indian Students Face Uncertainty Amid Expanded Vetting Measures

The Trump administration has temporarily halted the scheduling of new student visa interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide. Announced on May 27, 2025, the pause is part of a broader plan to intensify social media vetting for F, M, and J visa applicants—categories that cover most international students and exchange visitors.

While already scheduled interviews will go ahead, no new appointments will be accepted until further notice. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the department is reviewing screening protocols and may soon require visa applicants to submit social media history dating back to 2019.

The decision is a major blow for Indian students, who represent the largest international student group in the U.S. with over 331,000 enrolled in the 2023–2024 academic year—a 23% rise from the previous year. Many now face uncertainty over their educational futures, financial plans, and travel arrangements.

The policy shift has sparked outrage and protests, particularly at top institutions like Harvard University, which is already under scrutiny from the administration. Critics argue that the new rules reflect a tightening of U.S. immigration policies and may discourage academic exchange.

Experts advise students to monitor official updates closely, expect delays, and maintain transparency in their digital presence to avoid complications during the enhanced vetting process.
