TVK Pushes ‘Vijay for PM’ Pitch, Congress Calls It ‘Fan Mindset’

The political debate over Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s national ambitions intensified on Wednesday, with the party projecting him as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Reacting to the growing campaign within TVK, the Congress dismissed the projection as a reflection of a “fan mindset” and reiterated that Rahul Gandhi remains the party’s choice for the Prime Minister’s post in the 2029 general elections.

The issue gained prominence after TVK legislators began openly advocating Vijay’s candidature for the top national post. The campaign also moved beyond the Tamil Nadu Assembly, with party leaders asserting that the state could play a decisive role in determining the country’s next Prime Minister.

TVK legislator Kanimozhi on Wednesday said Vijay would be the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.

“Delhi will not decide who becomes PM. Tamil Nadu will decide,” the Kavundampalayam MLA said, underscoring the party’s growing national ambitions.

The Congress, however, maintained that its leadership remains firmly behind Rahul Gandhi as its Prime Ministerial choice for the 2029 elections, setting the stage for an increasingly competitive political narrative ahead of the polls.
