Trump Steps Back from India-Pakistan Mediation Claim: Credits Peace to “Two Smart Leaders”

Washington – In a significant shift from his earlier stance, U.S. President Donald Trump has walked back his claim of intervening in the India–Pakistan conflict. Instead, he now attributes the de-escalation to the decisive dialogue between the leaders of both nations, calling them “two smart leaders” who chose peace over war.

This marks the first time Trump has publicly refrained from suggesting direct U.S. involvement in facilitating a ceasefire between the nuclear-armed neighbors, following heightened tensions after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

Speaking after his meeting with Pakistan Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir, who is currently on a five-day visit to the U.S., Trump said, “I’m thankful both India and Pakistan made the wise choice not to go to war. Both are nuclear powers—had conflict escalated, the consequences could have been catastrophic. But they chose peace, and I’m happy about that.”

Trump added that he personally thanked the Pakistani military chief for showing restraint and avoiding confrontation with India. He also noted that he had spoken to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few days prior.

The former president emphasized that the U.S. is working on trade deals with both India and Pakistan, and that broader regional stability remains a top priority. Trump also discussed the Iran–Israel conflict with Munir, noting that Pakistan, with its insight into Iran, is closely watching the situation with concern.

The Trump-Munir meeting, held during a private lunch on Wednesday, took place without the presence of other senior Pakistani officials. Observers view strengthening military cooperation with the U.S. as a major goal of Munir’s visit.

Meanwhile, supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan staged demonstrations outside Munir’s hotel and near the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, demanding the restoration of democracy in Pakistan.
