Thrissur – In a heartbreaking incident, three migrant workers from West Bengal lost their lives early Friday morning when a two-storey residential building collapsed in Kodakara, Thrissur, following relentless rainfall.
The deceased have been identified as Rupel, Rahul, and Ali — all hailing from West Bengal. The collapse occurred around 6 a.m. while the victims were reportedly preparing to leave for work.
The front portion of the ageing building, which had a tiled roof and concrete frontage, suddenly gave way, burying the workers under heavy debris. Fire and rescue teams, along with local police, launched an immediate rescue operation and managed to extricate two of the victims. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, both were declared dead on arrival. The third victim was recovered shortly afterward, but attempts to save his life also proved unsuccessful.
Seventeen people were residing in the building at the time of the incident. Authorities have since moved the bodies to Thrissur Medical College for postmortem. A detailed investigation is underway to determine the structural integrity of similar old buildings in the region.
The tragedy has raised serious concerns about the safety of migrant workers and the condition of older residential structures, especially during Kerala’s monsoon season.
