On the solemn occasion of Swahid Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the remarkable bravery and sacrifices of those who participated in the historic Assam Movement (1979-1985). The movement, pivotal in Assam’s history, sought to address illegal immigration and protect the state’s cultural identity. Modi paid tribute to the martyrs, including Khargeswar Talukdar, the first to lay down his life for the cause.
Acknowledging the courage of 860 martyrs, the Prime Minister stated their sacrifices continue to inspire the progress of Assam and the nation. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also commemorated the day, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Assam’s language, heritage, and traditions. This national recognition underscores the movement’s lasting impact on Assamese identity and the broader mission to preserve India’s cultural integrity.
Swahid Diwas serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of those who fought to protect Assam’s future.
