Supreme Court Stays Kerala HC Order on Elephant Distancing Rules for Thrissur Pooram

In a significant decision, the Supreme Court of India directed the organizers of the iconic Thrissur Pooram festival to comply with the Captive Elephants Rules. The apex court also stayed the Kerala High Court’s recent orders mandating a strict three-metre distance between elephants paraded during the festival.

The Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms — the primary organizers of Thrissur Pooram — had challenged the Kerala High Court’s rulings. The HC orders included stringent guidelines regarding the welfare and spacing of elephants, sparking concerns about the traditional aspects of the festival.

The Supreme Court, while staying the HC’s directives, clarified that all procedures under the Captive Elephants Rules must be adhered to, ensuring both safety and welfare without imposing measures deemed impractical by the festival organizers.

The Thrissur Pooram, held annually in Kerala, is famed for its grand display of caparisoned elephants and vibrant processions. The controversy over elephant safety and spacing rules highlights the delicate balance between tradition and animal welfare.

This decision ensures that Thrissur Pooram can proceed with its traditional grandeur while remaining compliant with existing animal welfare laws.
