In a major development, the Supreme Court of India has directed popular YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia, widely known as BeerBiceps, to suspend all his shows after facing charges of obscenity over controversial remarks made on the online comedy show India’s Got Latent.
A bench led by Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh granted Allahabadia interim protection from arrest but strongly criticized his comments, calling them “condemnable” and “reprehensible.” The court emphasized that such statements violate societal norms under the pretext of free speech.
The controversy has led to multiple FIRs being filed against Allahabadia in Maharashtra and Assam, prompting him to seek the Supreme Court’s intervention to consolidate the cases. The court has also allowed him to approach the police for protection amid reports of death threats and has directed him to fully cooperate with investigations, including surrendering his passport.
Following widespread backlash, Allahabadia has issued a public apology, and the controversial episode has been taken down from all platforms. This incident has reignited India’s ongoing debate on free speech and obscenity, particularly in the realm of digital content creation.
