Supreme Court Questions Delay in Delhi Firecracker Ban, Stresses Environmental Responsibility

The Supreme Court of India recently criticized the Delhi government’s delay in enforcing the firecracker ban, questioning why the restriction, which had been ordered earlier, was only implemented on October 14. In its remarks, the court emphasized that no religion supports actions that contribute to pollution or harm public health, particularly in the case of fireworks during festivals.

The court underscored the importance of balancing religious traditions with environmental protection, highlighting that festivals should not come at the cost of air quality or public health. It further called for stricter enforcement of environmental laws to tackle the growing problem of pollution, particularly during festive seasons when the use of firecrackers tends to rise.

This ruling reinforces the idea that no religious practice should justify environmental harm. The Supreme Court’s strong stance has sparked broader discussions on the environmental impact of festivals and the shared responsibility of both the government and the public in safeguarding the environment.
