Supreme  Court dismisses  Gujarat Government’s plea  to review its remarks

By Our  Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: The Supreme  Court on Sept 26 found  no “error apparent on the  face  of the  record” or  merit  in a  petition filed  by the  Gujarat Government  to review adverse remarks made  against  it by the  apex court  in a judgment  delivered on January  08 this  year.
The  judgment had quashed  the  premature release of 11 men sentenced   to life imprisonment for  the  gang rape of Bilkis Bano and  the murder  of her  family  during the 2002 riot in the  Gujarat state.
The  state of Gujarat had  remitted the  life sentence of the  11 convicts and released  from Jail in august 2022.
The  Supreme  Court January  08 verdict had  passed scathing remarks about the  alacrity shown by the Gujarat government  to “usurp”  Maharashtra  Government’s  authority  in deciding  the remission.
The  trial in the  case was  held in Maharashtra which  was  the  competent authority  to decide the remission application of the  11 convicts.
“We  are  satisfied that  there  is  error apparent on the  face of  the  record or  any  merit in the  review petitions”, the Supreme  Court said.
