Stormy Days Ahead: Kerala Braces for Thunderstorms and Rising Heat Over the Next Four Days

A strengthening low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring thunderstorms and heavy rain to Kerala over the next four days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system, currently intensifying over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is projected to move north-northwest over the central-west Bay before shifting to a north-northeast direction and gradually weakening within 24 hours.

The IMD has issued a cautionary alert, warning that lightning strikes can be extremely dangerous—posing serious threats to human and animal life, and capable of damaging electrical appliances and communication infrastructure. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this unstable weather phase.

Adding to the weather woes, temperatures are on the rise across Kerala. A yellow alert has been issued for 12 districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Daytime temperatures are expected to soar up to 37°C in Palakkad, Kollam, and Thrissur, and reach around 36°C in other affected districts. The IMD also warned that the combination of high temperatures and humidity could lead to hot and sticky conditions, particularly in lowland areas, adding further discomfort for residents.
