The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has, for the first time in its history, elected women to its top leadership roles. Celebrated actress Shwetha Menon has taken charge as President, while Cuckoo Parameswaran has been chosen as General Secretary. Actor Unni Shivapal will serve as Treasurer.
The closely watched election saw Shwetha triumph over actor Devan and Cuckoo defeat actor Ravindran, with both securing a clear majority of votes. Conducted at Kochi Marriott Hotel between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., the polls drew in 507 eligible members — including 233 women — with industry icons such as Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi casting their ballots. Mammootty, however, could not attend due to prior commitments in Chennai.
The leadership change follows months of heated debates, allegations, and discussions sparked by the Hema Committee report, culminating in Mohanlal and the executive committee stepping down on August 27.
This historic win marks a turning point for AMMA, ushering in a new era of women-led leadership and stronger female representation in the Malayalam film industry’s most influential body.
