Thrissur, Aug 05 (IVC) It seems that the noted writer in English and Member of Lok Sabha Mr Shashi Tharoor has held the tiger by tail with the use of the word “memorable” recently.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor MP on Aug 04 responded to social media reactions to his “memorable day in Wayanad” post on ‘X’ saying that ‘memorable’ means something that is “unforgettable”. Tharoor had toured the landslides-hit area on Aug 03 Saturday and posted a short video titled ‘Some memories of a memorable day in Wayanad’.
But his choice of the word ‘memorable’ had attracted a backlash on social media.
Tharoor was forced to resign from the ministry of Manmohan Singh some years back following his use of “cattle class”. This was misconstrued by the pressmen that Tharoor demanded cattle to travel by air. In English language cattle class meant lower class only.
It would be apt to quote the remarks of late V K Krishna Menon on journalists in India. He had said that the journalists in India would write that banana was eaten by him when he said he has eaten a banana. It showed that English standard of journalists in India are very poor. He also described the press in India as jute press.
It would be most unfortunate of all that the noted writer Shashi Tharoor MP did not know how to use the word ‘memorable’. I think it would be apt to quote William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: “ The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings”.
