Seaplane Project Takes Off: Kerala Gets Approval for 48 Routes

Thiruvananthapuram: The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has granted approval for 48 seaplane routes in Kerala, marking a major milestone in the state government’s ambitious seaplane project. The announcement was made by Public Works and Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, who said that the project is now steadily moving toward becoming a reality.

According to the minister, the approved routes have been allotted to multiple aviation operators including India One Air, Mehair, PHL, and SpiceJet. The permissions will allow these companies to operate seaplane services connecting key destinations across the state.

Minister Riyas noted that Kerala is completing each preparatory step required for the full-scale launch of the project. Earlier, a trial flight was conducted from Kochi to Mattupetty in Idukki district, showcasing the potential of seaplane tourism in the state.

minister added that the government is in the process of setting up the necessary infrastructure to support regular operations, including terminals and waterdromes. Funds for the project have already been earmarked in the state budget.

Riyas emphasized that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government is committed to implementing the seaplane project through consensus and cooperation, particularly focusing on using dams and reservoirs as key hubs for water-based aviation in Kerala.

The minister expressed optimism that the project will soon take full flight, giving a major boost to tourism, regional connectivity, and sustainable transport across the state.
