New Delhi: Opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday after staging a surprise sit-in outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, demanding his resignation.
The protest, held in the high-security zone near the Prime Minister’s residence, triggered a swift response from the government. Authorities moved quickly to prevent the demonstration from escalating in the sensitive area.
In an effort to resolve the situation peacefully, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan visited the protest site and held talks with the opposition leaders, urging them to end the dharna and leave the area.
Rahul Gandhi held a brief discussion with the minister, but the talks failed to produce a breakthrough. Following the unsuccessful negotiations, police detained the opposition leaders and forcibly removed them from the protest site.
The incident marks a major political confrontation between the opposition and the Centre, with leaders accusing the government of suppressing democratic protests, while authorities maintained that security protocols around the Prime Minister’s residence had to be strictly enforced.
