Rahul Gandhi Slams PM and Home Minister Over ‘Midnight’ CEC Appointment

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has strongly criticized the government’s “midnight” decision to appoint Gyanesh Kumar as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Gandhi termed the timing of the appointment as “disrespectful” and “discourteous,” particularly as the selection process is under review by the Supreme Court.

Gandhi emphasized the vital importance of an independent Election Commission, free from executive interference, in ensuring democratic integrity. He accused the government of violating the Supreme Court’s order by removing the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee, heightening concerns over the electoral process’s transparency.

In a dissent note during the selection committee meeting, Gandhi raised alarms about the government’s actions and reiterated the need to safeguard the independence of the Election Commission. He also pointed out that the process and committee composition are being challenged in the Supreme Court, with a crucial hearing set for February 19, 2025.

The government’s decision to move ahead with the appointment, despite ongoing legal challenges, has sparked fears about the credibility and autonomy of the Election Commission. The upcoming Supreme Court hearing is expected to provide clarity on the constitutional validity of the appointment process.

Gandhi’s criticism highlights the broader debate over the Election Commission’s independence and the need for a transparent, unbiased process in selecting its leadership.
