Thiruvananthapuram: Electricity consumers in Kerala can expect lower bills in June, thanks to a reduction in the fuel surcharge announced by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). The move comes as a welcome relief amid rising living costs.
Starting June, the fuel surcharge will be slashed by 3 paise per unit for monthly bill payers, and by 1 paise per unit for bimonthly domestic consumers. The existing surcharge of 8 paise per unit will now drop to 5 and 7 paise, respectively.
Fuel surcharges are applied to compensate for spikes in power generation costs due to fluctuating fuel prices. The ₹12.39 crore additional burden incurred in April will now be recovered over the June billing cycle.
In a consumer-friendly move, KSEB has fully exempted households with connected loads up to 1000 watts and monthly usage below 40 units, along with green tariff consumers, from any fuel surcharge — offering further savings to low-usage homes.
