PM Modi Emphasizes Economic Self-Reliance After Trump’s ‘Dead Economy’ Remark

New Delhi: In a strong response to former US President Donald Trump’s recent jibe calling India a “dead economy,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underlined the country’s economic priorities and renewed his push for Swadeshi (self-reliant) manufacturing and trade.

Trump’s comments came just days after he announced a 25% import tariff on Indian goods, effective August 7, along with a warning of further penalties if India continues its purchase of Russian crude oil and military equipment.

Responding firmly, PM Modi said India remains committed to protecting its economic sovereignty and would intensify efforts to boost domestic production, reduce dependence on imports, and strengthen its global trade presence through self-reliant strategies under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.

While the government has not officially commented on the tariff decision yet, sources indicate that diplomatic channels are actively working to address the issue. India’s trade and foreign ministries are expected to hold consultations in the coming days.

The escalating tension comes at a time when India is making rapid strides in sectors like green energy, digital infrastructure, defence production, and semiconductors, and Modi’s remarks are seen as a signal to both global partners and domestic industries that India will pursue an independent and resilient economic path.
