Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted India’s ambitious and historic Project Cheetah, calling the majestic big cats “one of the planet’s most remarkable creatures” while celebrating the country’s ongoing conservation efforts.
In a detailed social media post, the Prime Minister shared insights into the progress of the project, which reintroduced cheetahs to India after they were declared extinct in the country more than seven decades ago. Modi emphasized that the initiative reflects India’s deep commitment to protecting endangered species and restoring ecological balance.
Launched in September 2022, Project Cheetah brought cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The goal was to revive the species on Indian soil through scientific wildlife management and long-term habitat restoration.
PM Modi noted that the project is not merely an attempt to increase animal numbers but is a symbol of India’s growing global leadership in wildlife conservation. He also praised the dedicated teams of forest officials, researchers, and veterinarians who have been working tirelessly to ensure the animals adapt to their new environment.
Calling the cheetah reintroduction a “moment of pride for every Indian,” the Prime Minister said the initiative showcases the nation’s ability to take bold, innovative steps for environmental protection.
He stressed that conservation projects like this play a critical role in educating future generations about the importance of biodiversity, sustainable coexistence, and habitat preservation.
As Project Cheetah continues to evolve, authorities remain optimistic that the species will gradually thrive and expand across new habitats in the coming years.
