Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s ambitious Kerala Fiber Optic Network (KFON) project has crossed a major milestone, delivering over 1.3 lakh internet connections across the state. The achievement marks a significant step in Kerala’s mission to build an inclusive digital infrastructure and ensure internet access as a basic right.
According to officials, the majority of these connections have been provided to economically disadvantaged households, government offices, and public institutions. KFON aims to bridge the digital divide by offering high-speed, affordable broadband to communities that previously lacked reliable connectivity.
The project, implemented through the Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd (KSITIL), has already laid thousands of kilometres of fiber-optic cable across urban and rural regions. This enables government services, e-learning platforms, telemedicine, and digital banking to reach remote areas.
Authorities said the project is progressing at an accelerated pace, with plans to further expand coverage and improve bandwidth capacity in the coming months. KFON is also expected to boost Kerala’s digital economy, support startups, and strengthen the state’s e-governance initiatives.
With over 1.3 lakh connections now active, KFON is being hailed as one of the largest and most successful digital inclusion projects in India, setting a model for other states to replicate.
