Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is bracing for fresh spells of rain during the Onam festival as a new low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal by Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned. While no immediate rain alerts are in place until Tuesday, showers are expected to strengthen from Wednesday onwards.
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday, and for Thrissur, Kannur, and Kasaragod on Thursday. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely during these days.
Fishermen have been advised caution as strong winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected over the north Kerala–Lakshadweep coast, creating rough sea conditions. Fishing activities in these waters are strictly discouraged on Thursday.
Adding to the concern, the National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has predicted the occurrence of Kallakkadal (swell waves) along coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram (Varkala-Kappil to Pozhiyoor), Kollam, and Alappuzha. Waves reaching 1.4–1.6 meters are likely between 5:30 pm today and 2:30 pm tomorrow (Tuesday), raising the risk of sea incursions. Coastal residents and fishermen have been urged to stay vigilant.
