New Low-Pressure System Brewing in Bay of Bengal; Heavy Rains Forecast for Kerala — Yellow Alert Issued

A fresh low-pressure area is set to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 22, with the system expected to track west-northwest and intensify into a deep depression over the central south Bay of Bengal by November 24, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Kerala is bracing for two days of heavy rainfall, especially across southern and central districts. In view of the forecast, the IMD has issued Yellow Alerts in multiple districts:

  • Saturday: Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki
  • Sunday: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam

The weather activity is being influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and another at upper levels over the Malacca Strait. The upcoming low-pressure system is expected to gain strength further as it moves across the Bay.

Kerala may experience isolated heavy showers today and tomorrow, along with thunderstorms and lightning expected until November 24.

Meanwhile, the IMD has stated that fishing activities can continue safely today along the Kerala–Karnataka–Lakshadweep coasts.
