Nepal Directs Government Bodies to Prioritise Locally Made Products

Kathmandu: The Nepal government has directed public institutions to give preference to locally produced goods and services while making official purchases, officials said on Thursday. The move has been taken under the direction of Prime Minister Balendra Shah to promote the use of domestic products across government establishments.

The directive requires government offices to implement the policy within the existing laws and procedures governing public procurement. Officials at the Prime Minister’s Office said institutions have been asked to ensure compliance while following the applicable legal framework.

A Council of Ministers circular issued on Wednesday covers a wide range of public bodies, including federal ministries, commissions, secretariats, provincial governments and local authorities. Nepal’s diplomatic missions abroad have also been asked to prioritise Nepali products and services in their procurement.
