Monsoon Intensifies in Kerala: IMD Issues Orange Alerts for Kannur and Kasaragod

Thiruvananthapuram: The southwest monsoon has made a strong comeback in Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing rain alerts across multiple districts through Wednesday. Following a brief lull, heavy downpours have returned to the state, with more intense rainfall expected in the coming days.

Today, all districts except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam are under a yellow alert due to the likelihood of isolated heavy showers. The IMD has forecast continued rainfall throughout the week.

The most significant warning comes for Wednesday (July 17), when Kannur and Kasaragod are under an orange alert, indicating a high probability of very heavy rain in isolated areas. Other districts, including Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, remain under yellow alerts.

Here’s the district-wise alert schedule:

  • Sunday (July 14): Yellow alert for Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod
  • Monday (July 15): Yellow alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod
  • Tuesday (July 16): Alerts for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod
  • Wednesday (July 17): Orange alert in Kannur and Kasaragod; yellow alert in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant, especially in landslide-prone regions and low-lying flood-prone zones. Tourists are advised to avoid trekking and visiting dangerous spots near rivers and hills. The State Disaster Management Authority is closely monitoring the evolving weather conditions.
