Thiruvananthapuram: Elections to choose heads and deputy heads of local self-government institutions across Kerala are being held today. In municipal corporations, the mayoral elections will take place at 10 a.m., followed by the deputy mayor elections at 2.30 p.m. The mayoral posts in Kannur, Thrissur and Kochi corporations are reserved for women.
Elections for chairpersons and vice chairpersons in municipalities are also being conducted today. Across the state, 86 municipalities will elect their chairpersons and vice chairpersons.
In Tripunithura municipality, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to come to power, after the Congress decided not to support the CPI(M). Advocate P. L. Babu is the BJP’s candidate for chairperson, while Radhika Varma is the candidate for vice chairperson.
In Kunnamkulam municipality, CPI(M)’s Soumya Anilan is set to become the chairperson. In Kodungallur, CPI’s Honey Peethambaran is expected to take charge as chairperson, while H. Akbar will assume the post in Chavakkad and M. P. Jackson in Irinjalakuda.
Meanwhile, elections to the posts of presidents of grama, block and district panchayats will be held tomorrow at 10.30 a.m., followed by vice-president elections at 2.30 p.m.
