Lok Sabha Clears Motion of Thanks Without PM’s Reply; Opposition Uproar Over Rahul Gandhi Speech Ban

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address without a reply from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, amid repeated disruptions triggered by Opposition protests. The Prime Minister, who was scheduled to address the House, could not do so as proceedings were stalled by continuous uproar.

The turmoil erupted after Speaker disallowed Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi from speaking when he attempted to cite portions of former Army Chief M.M. Naravane’s memoir on the Chinese incursion in Ladakh. Angered by the move, Opposition members tore papers, stormed the well of the House, and engaged in heated exchanges with treasury bench members.

As the disorder persisted and normal business became impossible, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till noon, with the Congress and other Opposition parties continuing to protest what they termed an attack on parliamentary democracy.
