Kunal Kamra Questions Privilege Notice, Cites Bal Thackeray Cartoon

Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has questioned the Maharashtra legislature’s move to initiate privilege proceedings against him, pointing to a past example involving Bal Thackeray.

Kamra, who was served a breach of privilege notice over a satirical song targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, argued that Thackeray had published a cartoon critical of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi without facing similar action.

The comedian raised the comparison to question the consistency of privilege proceedings, especially as Shinde has often claimed to carry forward Thackeray’s political legacy.

The development comes amid an ongoing debate over freedom of expression and the limits of legislative privilege in responding to political satire.
