Indian weightlifter Komal Kohar secured a bronze medal in the women’s 48kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championships, giving hosts India their first medal of the tournament.
The 23-year-old athlete, competing in place of Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, delivered a steady performance with a total lift of 177kg.
Komal lifted 78kg in the snatch event and 99kg in clean and jerk. Her clean and jerk effort also earned her a separate bronze medal in the discipline.
The medal marks an encouraging start for India at the continental championship being held in Gandhinagar.
