In a strong call for action to tackle Bengaluru’s growing garbage problem, Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has urged the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to take immediate steps to ensure a cleaner city. Highlighting the importance of community participation in waste management, she proposed an innovative solution: a “Cleanest Ward” contest to inspire residents and local authorities to keep their neighborhoods spotless.
Known as India’s tech hub, Bengaluru, according to Mazumdar-Shaw, should set a high standard for cleanliness and waste management. She believes that such a competition will not only encourage better waste disposal practices but also instill a sense of civic pride and responsibility among the city’s residents.
The idea has received positive feedback from local citizens and environmental groups, who are hopeful that this initiative could be the catalyst for lasting change. While BBMP officials have yet to respond, the suggestion has already sparked a conversation about improving Bengaluru’s waste management and making it a cleaner, more sustainable city.
