Kerala to Launch Statewide Anti-Drug Campaign Amid Rising Juvenile Substance Abuse Cases

Kerala is facing an alarming surge in juvenile drug abuse, prompting the state government to take decisive action. Over the past two months, 149 adolescents have sought rehabilitation for substance addiction at the ‘Vimukthi’ de-addiction center in Pala. Disturbingly, 20 of these individuals were under the age of 15, highlighting the growing crisis among Kerala’s youth.

In response, the state government has announced a comprehensive anti-drug campaign set to launch on April 1. This initiative will bring together government agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations to combat the rising tide of substance abuse. The campaign aims to raise awareness, prevent drug use, and provide support for affected individuals.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has emphasized the need for collective action, stating that schools will play a key role in the initiative. Plans include forming school protection groups comprising police officers, local representatives, teachers, and community leaders to shield students from drug-related threats. Additionally, monthly meetings between police and residents’ associations will be held to address concerns and enhance coordination efforts.

The ‘Vimukthi’ initiative, a key government program, will continue to play a pivotal role in creating awareness and offering rehabilitation services. With this large-scale campaign, Kerala aims to curb substance abuse and protect its youth, ensuring a healthier and drug-free future.
