Kochi: Responding to mounting public outcry over soaring movie ticket rates, the Kerala government has told the High Court that it has formed a special committee to review and reform cinema ticket pricing. The move follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking regulation of what’s being called “exploitative” dynamic pricing in multiplexes.
The PIL, filed by Manu Nair G., alleges that multiplexes use opaque, algorithm-driven pricing models that sharply inflate rates during peak demand. Reports claim that standard tickets have touched ₹1,200, while recliner seats have soared to ₹1,400 — far beyond what many viewers can afford.
On June 10, a division bench led by Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji directed the state to explain its stance, noting the formation of the committee tasked with recommending fair and transparent pricing mechanisms.
The court has postponed further proceedings until the panel submits its findings, raising hopes among moviegoers for a more affordable cinematic experience in Kerala.
