Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is experiencing a significant rise in temperatures as dust storms from northern regions intensify, despite the cooling effects usually associated with the La Niña phenomenon.
Weather experts report that strong winds are carrying dust from North India and neighboring regions, leading to hazy conditions and a spike in mercury levels across the state. Several districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, and Kozhikode, have recorded above-normal temperatures, raising concerns over extreme summer conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the ongoing dust storms could contribute to worsening air quality and prolonged heat stress. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and take precautions against respiratory issues caused by increased dust levels.
Despite La Niña typically bringing cooler and wetter conditions, the current weather pattern suggests that local atmospheric changes and global climate shifts are playing a significant role in Kerala’s unexpected temperature rise.
