Thiruvananthapuram: With COVID-19 cases rising across South Asia, Kerala is stepping up precautions amid signs of a local spike. Health Minister Veena George has urged residents—especially those with symptoms like cold, sore throat, cough, or breathing issues—to wear masks without fail.
In May alone, 182 new COVID cases have been reported in Kerala, with Kottayam (57), Ernakulam (34), and Thiruvananthapuram (30) topping the list. The surge is believed to be linked to new subvariants of the Omicron JN.1 strain—LF.7 and NB.1.8—which spread rapidly but tend to cause milder infections.
The Minister emphasized the need for vigilance, personal hygiene, and responsible behavior, particularly ahead of the monsoon season when other diseases like dengue, leptospirosis, and waterborne infections are also expected to rise.
Key guidelines include:
- Mandatory masks for symptomatic individuals, healthcare workers, and in hospital settings
- Elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses should wear masks in public and while traveling
- Avoid unnecessary hospital visits
- Regular handwashing and adherence to hospital COVID protocols
A meeting of the State-Level Rapid Response Team (RRT) has been held to assess the evolving situation and coordinate preventive measures.
