Kerala Nears Historic Milestone: CM Pinarayi Vijayan Announces State’s Drive to Eliminate Extreme Poverty

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared that Kerala is on the verge of becoming the first Indian state to completely eradicate extreme poverty, marking a new chapter in the state’s social development journey.

The Chief Minister, who conceptualised and spearheaded the initiative, said that the project—built on interdepartmental coordination and rigorous monitoring—is now in its final stages.

“Kerala’s poverty eradication model is people-centered and sustainable, ensuring access to housing, healthcare, education, and livelihoods for every vulnerable family,” Mr. Vijayan said, emphasizing that the mission aims to bring about long-term social and economic transformation rather than temporary relief.

Officials noted that local bodies and welfare departments have played a crucial role in identifying and supporting families living in extreme poverty. The initiative, launched as part of the ‘Nava Keralam’ vision, underscores the state’s deep commitment to inclusive growth, equity, and social justice.

Once completed, this ambitious project will position Kerala as a national leader in poverty eradication, setting a powerful example of how governance, compassion, and community participation can come together to transform lives.
