Kerala, India’s most literate state, is on the verge of making history by achieving full literacy. A recent study reveals that the state needs just 92,000 more literates to reach this remarkable milestone.
As of 2025, Kerala’s literacy rate stands at an impressive 96.2%, the highest among Indian states. With a population of approximately 3.6 crore (36 million), the state has consistently prioritized education as a pillar of its development.
To close the literacy gap, Kerala has launched the third phase of the ULLAS – New India Literacy Program, focusing on educating the remaining illiterate population, especially women, who form a significant portion of this group. The initiative integrates community-based educational sessions, vocational training, and awareness campaigns to encourage participation from all sections of society.
The government’s determined efforts aim to ensure universal literacy, empowering individuals and driving socio-economic progress. Achieving this goal will not only enhance the quality of life for Kerala’s residents but also set a gold standard for other states to follow.
