Kochi: In a major relief for highway commuters, the Kerala High Court has ruled that toilets at petrol pumps along national highways must be open to everyone — not just customers.
Reversing its earlier order that restricted usage to patrons, the court clarified that the facilities should be accessible to the public at any time, with restrictions permitted only in cases of security concerns. It also directed that local body boards must not be placed inside these restrooms.
The verdict came while hearing a writ petition filed by the Petroleum Traders Association, challenging the state government’s notification that mandated public access to such toilets. The court’s latest decision now ensures that every traveller on national highways in Kerala can use these facilities without hesitation.
