The Kerala GST Department has launched a sweeping operation, Operation Fuego Marino, targeting illegal production and distribution of counterfeit diesel across the state. More than 400 officers from the Vigilance and Enforcement Wing conducted raids at over 50 locations, uncovering a widespread network supplying fake diesel—mainly to fishing boats and through unauthorized coastal pumps and illegal outlets.
Despite its poor quality, the fake diesel was sold as genuine fuel at slightly lower prices, enabling operators to evade taxes and rake in hefty profits. This dangerous counterfeit diesel not only threatens the environment but also risks severe damage to engines and machinery.
Authorities suspect that such illicit activities, once concentrated in other states, are now spreading into Kerala. Ongoing investigations include searches of properties linked to those involved, as well as probing the roles of boat owners and illegal fuel dealers.
The state GST commissioner has vowed a zero-tolerance stance on these unlawful practices and warned of strict legal action against offenders. He also urged traders and consumers to stay alert and refrain from engaging with the illegal fuel trade.
This crackdown highlights Kerala GST’s firm commitment to safeguarding the state’s economy and environment from the harmful effects of black-market fuel operations.
