Amid demands from the Opposition for a state takeover, the Kerala government has indicated the possibility of extending the private deal for the Maniyar hydroelectric project. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, addressing the Kerala Assembly, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting captive power generation to promote ease-of-doing business in the state.
The Maniyar hydro project, which is privately operated, has been a point of contention, with Opposition parties alleging inadequate benefits to the state and calling for government control. However, the Chief Minister emphasized that such projects play a crucial role in attracting investments and ensuring energy security for industries.
“The government is focused on policies that enhance industrial growth while maintaining a balance with public interest,” Vijayan said, hinting at a pragmatic approach to managing the deal.
This statement comes amidst ongoing debates about privatization versus state ownership of critical infrastructure, with the Maniyar project becoming a focal point in Kerala’s energy policy discussions.
