Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan paid heartfelt tribute to acclaimed filmmaker Shaji N. Karun, describing him as an icon of world cinema whose contributions brought global recognition to Malayalam cinema.

In a condolence message following Karun’s passing, the Chief Minister said that the filmmaker’s works transcended regional boundaries and earned widespread admiration both nationally and internationally. “Shaji N. Karun’s films were rich in artistic depth and human sensitivity. His vision elevated Malayalam cinema to the global stage,” Mr. Vijayan noted.

Karun, a pioneering figure in Indian parallel cinema, is best known for masterpieces such as Piravi, Vanaprastham, and Swaham, all of which received international acclaim. His debut feature Piravi won the prestigious Caméra d’Or – Mention d’honneur at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989, firmly establishing him as a filmmaker of international stature.
